Col du Plan – North Face 10.05.09

3475 m ; 600 m 45°- 50° ; North ; TD ; 5.3/ E4

Galvanized by the great day we had yesterday on the north face of the Aiguille du Midi we decided to go skiing the north face of Col du Plan.
We decided to ski the direct entry that was looking good and apparently was not skied in the last few last winters.
As soon we arrived there I had a strange feeling; the ice was not far away. I was going first and so I asked for the rope to enter, it was a good call.
Just the time to enter into the face and a slab slid under my feet.
Now the ice was just 15- 20cm beneath my board and at every turn I touched it with my edge.
I managed to do the last turns on the steep face without the rope but after my passage there was no more snow left for my friends and the ice was eerily shining.
They joined me with a rappel and then we started flying down the lower angle slope above the hanging glacier; what a sensation to put big turns in over there! It was like to be in another dimension, a different space and time.
Reaching the small snowy saddle on the right, just before the big serac jump, we set off a 60m rappel which brought us down to the exit couloir.
The snow here was not perfect and we passed the mixed step that closes the couloir in its middle part with a 15m rappel.
We still had space for some big turns on the cone on the way down to the middle station.
May, what a nice month!
