I’m pretty happy to have rode “the Rabbit Ear” with the rabbit boy :-), Ben Briggs, this afternoon.
It has been one of those Saturdays when I hate Chamonix, when everything goes wrong and we are in the wrong place in the wrong moment: First, I got stuck in traffic with people rolling in slow motion, stopping on the side without indicating and looking at me from the window with big eyes and gasping like a moonfish in the aquarium. Second, we went up to Flegere heading to the Aiguille Rouge but the strong wind at the top of the Index chairlift kicked us back to the valley bottom.
At 1 pm we were still at square one so we decided to go to Grands Montets…what an idea !!!
The queue to the top bin was massive and depression quickly started to pulse through my veins, but thanks to a motivating friend that we met on the way, we decided to go anyway and ride it with the sunset light. This is an amazing hidden line for only 10 minutes climbing and 10 minutes down climbing from the top lift of Grands Montets.
It takes its name from the characteristic red granite pillar in the shape of rabbit ears that stands on the rocky ridge of the Petit Verte.
Although it is never really steep, it is pretty exposed nevertheless.
The snow was soft, maybe a bit too much so because in places it was too wet and sluffy but we had a great run, especially on the moraine under the Dru where still we found some deep and cold snow, painted in orangey-pink by the sun setting down…MAGIC !!!
